AID-L Partners with Harvest Hope
By: Claire Luttrell, MS, CCC-SLP
November is the perfect time to think of what you are thankful for. I am thankful for my family, friends, and my wonderful job at AID-L. I am thankful to work with so many wonderful children and their families on a daily basis. Many of us have so many blessings in our life, some that we don’t even think about most days. I have a roof over my head. I have clothes on my back. I have 3 meals a day. Most of us don’t have to think about where our next meal is coming from or if our children will have enough food to fuel their bodies for school. However, this is not the case for all. 1 in 6 South Carolinians struggle with food insecurity and hunger. That’s why in the month of November, AID-L is collecting food and other supplies to donate to Harvest Hope!
AID-L’s vision is to support the development of children, to strengthen families, and to foster hope. We want to support families in our community in an additional way this holiday season. Please consider donating food items and other necessities to help us give back to our wonderful community. We have a big box collecting items in our AID-L waiting room (at the “Seaside” building - 10 Jimmy Doolittle Drive Suite B). The kids have been enjoying decorating and coloring cans to tape on the box once they donate food items!
You can make this food drive a great learning experience for your kids!! Here are some ideas to incorporate SPEECH THERAPY into this month’s service initiative:
Expressive / Receptive Language:
Labeling food items
Receptively identifying which item you are naming
Describing an item without using the name
Counting items
Following directions using the items
Putting the items in or taking out the items (spatial concepts)
Lining items up smallest to biggest or lightest to heaviest
Sorting items by category
Phonological & Phonemic Awareness:
Spelling the name out of the item
Labeling / naming the first sound or last sound in the item’s name
Choosing items that have a target articulation sound in them
Making up sentences using target artic sounds
World Knowledge:
Talking about when you eat meals
Discussing how some children and families don’t have food for every meal
Brainstorming ideas to give back to the community
Letting your child pick out preferred food items
Having your child try new food items (the same as your donation)
Let’s work together to feed our community.
Let’s work together to give back to those who have less than us. Let’s work together to HARVEST HOPE.
